Why check a trailer VIN

Trailers are one of the most commonly stolen types of property in the US, and they're often resold quickly through private sales, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace. Without a VIN check, there's no way to verify you're not buying stolen property.

-Stolen trailer verification
-Salvage or total loss history
-Outstanding liens or financing
-Title brand history across all states
-Insurance auction records
-NHTSA safety recalls

Trailer types you can check

Enclosed trailers
Cargo trailers, tool trailers, and enclosed haulers.
Flatbed trailers
Commercial flatbeds for transporting heavy loads and equipment.

Open and enclosed auto transport trailers.
Boat trailers
Single and multi-axle boat trailers with VINs.
Dump trailers
Hydraulic dump trailers for construction and landscaping.

Tongue or coupler area
Metal plate attached to the frame near the hitch connection. The most common location.
Left side frame rail
Stamped directly into the frame rail, usually on the left (driver) side.
Front cross-member
Some manufacturers place the VIN plate on the front cross-member of the frame.
Title & registration
Always printed on the title document and registration card.

Trailer VIN check FAQ

Can I check a trailer VIN?

Yes. Any trailer with a 17-character VIN can be checked. Free instant preview, full report for $14.99.

Where is the VIN on a trailer?

Metal plate near the tongue/coupler, stamped on the left frame rail, or on the front cross-member. Also on title and registration.

Why are trailers commonly stolen?

Trailers are easy targets — they're parked outside, often unlocked, and can be hitched and driven away in minutes. Without a VIN check, buyers have no way to verify the seller actually owns it.

What if the trailer has no VIN plate?

A missing VIN plate is a red flag. It could indicate a homemade trailer, a very old trailer, or a stolen trailer with the VIN removed. Proceed with extreme caution.

Do all trailers have VINs?

Most road-legal trailers have VINs, but homemade trailers and very small utility trailers may not. If the trailer has a title, it has a VIN.

Don't buy a stolen trailer.
